Alternator not working

My alternator is not working on my 1983 10 Meter with 454 Crusaders. It started acting up a few months ago with a dancing meter. Going from 14.7 to 12 volts. The last month it would start at 12.6 volts the go to 14.6 at 2000 rpm's. Today it shows 12.8 off and when I start to motor it drops to 12.4 volt no mater the rpm's. This has an external regulator. Should I try to replace the regulator or the whole alternator considering the age. Where is the best place to buy a replacement for this model?

Took the logical route and replaced the alternator. Didn't realize how easy it would be.

I ordered a new alternator today for my 10 meter's starboard engine. Think it's been out for a while and was getting by with topping off after each trip with the charger. Until the charger died....
Thought about ordering two in my ongoing quest of something breaking on one engine, just replace both anyway since they're 30 year old components. By doing this, I can hopefully cross those items off the list of future problems.
My question:
Are there reverse alternators for the reverse rotation motor? I think the cooling fan blades should be the only difference? Does one side just get to cool better than the other, then the backward version just gets by with little to no cooling?
I never saw an option while on the hunt for a new correct part number...
