Engine stalls

Post by REMorgan »

I have a problem with my Port 318 engine in my F-30 Sport Fisherman. After it has been running in gear for about an hour it seems like my transmission is loading up the engine so much it dies. If I catch it in time and take it out of gear the engine rev's right back up to idle. Put it back in gear and the engine grinds to a halt. Starts right up again when out of gear. Gets worse the longer I run it. Any ideas.

I would try changing the fluid in the transmission and cleaning the screen first. Also look at your shift lever while you're down there and make sure it goes fully into the 'go ahead' position.

Rick,

when this "loading up" happens, have you gone down and tried to spin the shaft while the gear is in neutral? Id be nice to know that you don't have some real binding going on outside of the gear box (like from an over heated packing or something similar)

Danny, I have changed the fluid but not the screen. Where is the screen?

Jav, Yes I can spin the prop shaft while not in gear.

BTW-

I'm presuming you have a borg waner (velvet drive) 71c? If so, these don't typically "bind"- they may slip if pressure gets low or they can fuse and warp clutches getting stuck in gear but generally they don't bind.

Some other hydraulic gears can bind, like some zf/hurth gears.

Jav, You may be on to something with the shaft packing. I will re-pack the glan nuts first chance I get. Yes to the Velvet Drive.

you may have some rope in your wheel also
as it spins polyrope will heat and start binding on the shaft
