13 meter upgrades

I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year.

I am in the middle of some major work so I want to post some progress.

But before that here is a little backround on the vessel and how I got to this point.

This is the old "Black Jack" some of you may remember, bank repo, sitting in FL for a few years, then I put her on trailer and had her hauled up to South Amboy NJ (too expensive to cross over into NY)

I traveled to Jersey for weeks before she was ready to make the voyage to Freeport Long Island where I have a slip.

Then for 2 seasons I did some upgrades, and used her as much as I could.

June of 2012 I took her around Manhattan and up the East river, after spilling out in the Hudson river, I stopped at Chelsea Piers to let some guests off. When I got back into the Hudson river I couldnt get the port engine to go above 1100rpm's.

So I crawled back at 1100rpms, both motors still running.

This is what I found just sitting on top of the head on the port engine when I took the cover off...

I had my friend who works at Atlantic Detroit take a look.

The port engine besides the damage with the head (I have since found out the head is cracked in 4 places) it was only fire-ing on 1 piston.

The starboard engine was only fire-ing on 3 pistons.

I am surprised I made it as long as I did.

Both engines were very tired and need rebuilds.

So this is how I progressed from there.

After finding a Detroit specialist, I made the decision to get it done.

Thats not good . How much damage ?


Just saw your 2nd post . those 671 will keep running even with damage . I am sure she was running on more then 1 , but the others may have been weak.

Next was removing the trannys and the genny.

The trannys are capital gears, they have both been toatally rebuilt including clutch plates and a fresh paint job.

The genny is an 8kw which has never been taken care of (kind of like everything else on this boat)

I am probably not going to rebuilt the genny, just sell as is and put in a new 9.5kw with a kubota engine

I can only describe the wiring on this 1985 boat as a birdsnest filled with a bowl of spaghetti held together by 37 rolls of electrical tape

I absolutely hate all the major wires run right in front of both motors, and the belts are right there

yes there should be covers on the conduit but I just dont like it

BLCAKJACK had some very nice cosmetic upgrades and made a really nice appearance when she was here.

I guess the saying may apply here for "Beauty is only Skin Deep"

Nonetheless, she did look really nice in the photos, and from the dock.

many of these boats that are on the market suffer from negligence.

waning interest, lack of interest or lack of adequate financial wherewithal all have an effect.

Add to that the constant mechanical issues that arise as a vessel gets older.

Boats not properly maintained soon loose their fun factor when components fail or a trip or outing is spoiled.

Even worse when stranded with guests.

So here's a boat that was not adequately maintained, with expensive results.

The good news is that these engines are easily repaired and she now has a knowledgeable owner who will end up with a Bristol boat in the end.

As far as those wiring covers are concerned, I had the same problems here.

You can find the covers at GRAINGERS

In the end, you will have a better overall boat than the guy with the 12 year old SEARAY.

And another thing.....

you have NO DEPRCIATION COSTS like the guy with the new Searay or even the guy with the 4 year old Searay does.

All of your comments make sense

Unfortunately almost everything that was upgraded or touched previously needs to be updated again or totally ripped out and replaced.

I don't like to think about money, value and depreciation with boats, Im the guy who invests in lots of upgrades and typically gives the next owner a really good deal, I don't care, I just love boating and being on the water.

I am hoping after these major upgrades and a big investment, I will keep her for some time and just enjoy her.

I must say, she is very missed by the gang at the marina, with a 16ft beam, crazy JL Audio sound system and a K5LA train horn on the hardtop, she is the nucleus of the party, and things were not the same over the summer without her.

As for the wiring covers, I am heading in a totally different direction as you will soon see..

Upgrades coming here too, I already have all new Gaffrig gauges, I have Viking Panels working on new switch panels (which will be fully pre-wired) and all will be mounted in new 1/2" black starboard

This is the "housing box" that holds the wiring to bridge batteries together when one is dead and needs a jump, very old

I love that this 13m is getting a new lease on life. Pretty boat. Can't wait to see the finished product.
