Fuel not going from tank to engine

Post by Jcambc »

I have a Trojan 10 express with newly rebuilt 454 crusaders. The starboard engine is not getting fuel but my mechanic says the fuel pump is working. His plan is to put a "helper pump" by the fuel tank. The engine runs great but we have to pour gas in the carb. Is there a vent or some other reason the fuel won't come? Frustrating... We've spent almost a year renovating!

Bad pick-up tube in the tank or bad anti-siphon valve at the tank.

Take the fuel line going into the carb off, put a coffee can under it and crank the engine over. In about 2-3 seconds you should see 2-3 ozs.of fuel in the coffee can if it's feeding correctly

You can also try hooking up a portable gas tank to the engine at the pump. If she runs fine, it's the boat side that's the problem. If it still won't run, it's the engine side. Use a different fuel line, not the one that is already there and hook it up directly to the pump. Make sure you ventilate when you're working with fuel systems on board.

Anti-siphon valve, I can almost guarantee it. It's designed to overcome the force of the pump and do exactly what's happening now in the event that of a major fuel line leak while running. It's just a spring and a ball bearing and does the same thing why it's clogged.

As a test, try running with the gas cap removed from that engine.

mine did exactly the same both engines, however solved it at needle and seat valve in carbys. I rebuilt them and kits came with a supposedly new idea for this valve. New idea did not work. Put regular needle seat and voila everything is working fine now. Probably not your issue. ++ on checking the things others have said. I am also installing Racore filters in place of the small Frams my boat came with. Now I will have a metal bowl at bottom of filter to drain occasionally to get water out.

Let us know when you solve your issue so we all can learn or verify what we have already found. :)

You don't need a helper pump what is the vac reading on suction side ,if it's high u have a restriction if low the pump check valve is open
