Summer Cruising Plans

Some of you might be like me, whiling away the winter months dreaming about a cruise I hope to take this coming summer. Last season was pretty much a washout for us due to renovations onboard, all of which effectively took place in dry dock and so I suppose, I'm doubly excited about the prospect of casting off the lines for far away shores........... or at least getting out of sight of the marina.

If the mood strikes, you might take the time to tell us your favourite cruise from the past and also the one in the future that you're planning/hoping to make.

I for one hope to make up for lost time and so my wife and I are planning to put the throttles in "Slow Boat to China" mode and take a week or so, to cruise south through the Rideau Lakes to Lake Ontario at Kingston. Thereafter, as I've mentioned here before, we hope to cross the lake in order to visit Oswego and Sackets Harbour, NY. All in all, it looks like maybe about three weeks from start to finish. I know it's not the Great Loop but we can pretend.

The rest of our boating time this season will no doubt be spent within thirty miles of home base, on "out and back" week-end runs. But that's okay. Anchored in a bay with a good woman (my wife) a book, some single malt scotch and our own tunes. Priceless.

How far down the Hudson would that be. How many locks.

Hey Ken, To answer your question. We are on the Mohawk River which is the Erie Barge Canal between lock 6 and 7. So we would go thru "the flight" which is 6 locks and the federal lock in Troy, NY then we are home free. Total of 7. To get thru the flight it takes about a hour and a half.

It's more of a trip than a cruise, but we have booked and paid for Fourth of July in Provincetown. Also planning a cruise to Cape Ann in August.

How would that work?

Having cruised out of Boston Harbor once, on a Norwegian cruise ship, I remember thinking, "Boy, there are a lot of rocks and big waves out here."

I see a large marina located in Rockport. Is that where you'll eventually end up? I suspect your plan will be to run up the coast, possibly stopping off along the way.

The Annisquam river runs from Gloucester Harbor to Ipswich Bay. That is were we are planning to go on our trip. There is a couple of marinas, Cape Ann is the best one, on the river. We will also anchor or grab moorings along the way. Rockport was not on our list of places to stop, but it is beautiful. Did you take the Bermuda cruise or was it a port of call in Boston?

......so, does that mean you berth your Trojan up in that area or are you cruising up from Boston Harbor along the coast? Looks like a nice area up there.

The cruise ship I mentioned was during a cruise to Bermuda, when the Red Sox won the world series. Sports Bar was a busy spot that trip.

Sorry, I keep my boat in Quincy, just south of Boston. We would cruise up the coast stopping at islands and marinas along the way. I belong to a yacht club and many allow members of other clubs to use their facilities. Cruising for me is 20 knots. The trip would take 2 - 3 hours if we didn't stop for awhile, you know for refreshments.

Our boat is slipped in Red Wing, MN on the Mississippi. This summer, we hope to make it down to Dubuque IA, about a 400 mi round trip. Depending on the price of gas, we may make it a little further...

ill be doing Block Island RI as usual this year a few times and want to venture up to the Cape, I have friends family and a place to dock in Rock Harbor, Orleans MA

K4 - How much time would you set aside for the run up to Orleans. I'm assuming you'd go via the Cape Cod Canal. Block Island is no small jaunt either. I see that there is some docking available in Old Harbor (Block Island) - is that where you tend to go?

yes Old Harbor, I havent done the Cape in years, im cheap so id cruise slow, especially up the canal, maybe get lunch in sesuit harbor, id plan the better part of the day anyway, maybe even spend a night near the canal somewhere

if i don't loose the boat in the 'great split', my cruising will be limited to middle river, sue creek, and maybe to the inner harbour. again, if i'm able to hold onto her.
