Well since I have got my engines all dialed in and running great, I guess its time to move on to the generator. It seems to have a mind of its own, it does start when a load is applied, I can sometimes get it to start after flipping the on and off switch or the generator to shore power switch several times. When it does start it runs really ruff and doesnt make much power at all.
My question is were do I start, I have a ton of room to access the generator, is it possible to rebuild it on board ?

Re: generator rebuild
if it were me i'd pull it to rebuild. I had the same 6.5 MCCK in my boat. It was fairly easy to pull it and it not too heavy. I replaced mine with a 5kw kohler because the parts for the onan were next to impossible to find and expensive as heck. not sure how much access you have but it was much nicer to clean mine up to sell while it was on my work bench.

Re: generator rebuild
Start by reading chapter four in this manual http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/manuals/900-0196.pdf
Make sure your battery is strong 12.8Volts.... it should start with load off, switch on shore or off. Check spark plug and fuel supply filter and clean the carb and jets.
It should be easy to work on in the boat.....

Re: generator rebuild
personally, if i had the $$ to do it, i'd pull mine in an instant and replace it with a westerbeke. while the onans were good gensets, i think a more modern, continuous sign model would be much better. the onan mcck was good in it's day, but has been outpaced by much newer models out there. and, to be honest, they are not exactly DIY friendly. just my opinion.
