1981 Trojan F36

Post by Bjames777 »

Looking at an 81 F36 with twin Volvo diesels (230hp each is what I am told) and needed some advice before committing to purchase. Never owned a Trojan and the opinions are a wide and varied as the waves on the ocean. Really need some straight talk on all aspects of this boat so I can make an informed decision before my time runs out on the purchase agreement. Obviously I am scheduled to do a sea trial and survey. However, real world straight shooting is what I am after. My mission is to do mostly offshore fishing and cruising off the N. Carolina and eastern coast. I appreciate any help in making this decision.

The F36 it a good boat , but its not IMO a great off shore boat . You do need to pick your days . Also not sure what speed you looking for 230hp maybe little light on power again IMO . A sea trial will give you a better idea in both areas . Its a great inshore cruising boat ( 80% of my use )

Sounds like that F36 from the Hampton Virginia area that was listed a few years back. As Paul mentioned, a tad low on HP for that 36.

Good luck!

This one has the Volvo diesels and is in NY. I was thinking this was a bit underpowered. Inshore cruising isn't my thing. Mostly I'll be running 20-60 miles offshore to go fishing and down to the keys. The broker told me it tops out at 22mph and cruise is 16mph. I guess he like the mph number as to list it in knots shows it going slow enough to be in great danger of getting hit in the ass by a sunfish sailboat. Rats.
