Teak flooring question

Post by K4282 »

Hello y'all, for a winter project ive decided on redoing my teak strip aft deck flooring. I am wondering what the black substance is in between the teak strips. I ask because id like to touch this up and may build a similar flooring in the salon and galley. This will look amazing in the spring, I may even do an inlay in the hatch cover! The aluminum trim will probably be powder coated black to match, possibly white like im doing the cleats and surrounding hardware

The sealant between the teak strips is a one-part polyurethane sealant. This type sealant is typically used on masonry, but is used in this application. You can use Sika Flex, Tremco, Sonneborn NP1, etc.. Give at least 3-5 days to dry before applying any coating over the sealant. Good luck.

On my father's '69 we also used Sikaflex when needed. Be careful about how much you sand - don't want to make those planks too thin or they become too porous. Just do bare minimum.

Thanks guys, and I'm using 80 grit to take down the bare minimum, it clogs the paper some but I don't want to gouge and rip down too much, just the ugly layers of dark finish the PO put on. Thanks for the support and pic compliments, I've decided to powder coat the trim ring as well as cleats, flag holder and some trim I just had custom made in gloss black to protect the woodwork surrounding the cleats. The trim will sit on top of the woodwork to keep the lines from gouging and removing the finish. My first F32 had them, this one did not. I made a pattern and had it welded together probably a inch longer than my old boat had. My first F32 had separate pieces but sometimes the lines would miss them where they were attached mainly when towing a dingy or crossing stern dock lines so these are slightly larger and one piece to prevent that. I also just picked up my my new covers for my side windows made of sunbrella, two pieces and ditched the mini blinds, new sunbrella hatch covers currently being made, I cant wait till spring to see it all come together!
