Good Windlass tuneup

Post by Jimmy »

So the 5/8" Good Windlass was not working, took it off while the boat is on the hard. Put it on the bench and connected it to a car battery. Jumped the connections to similate the switch and the motor took right off. Both direction solenoids worked just fine, but were very corroded, so given the low cost, I will replace them. Either it was corrosion, or need to check the switch. Figured since I was this far, may as well crack the shell, and have a look inside. Oil was a bit on the goey side and somewhat low, however, the gears, and bearings were in like new condition. I will refill with oil and seal it up. But then thought.... Since I am this far,,,,, why not get the thing chromed up rather than keep the old dull faded rough finish. Has anyone done this? Or do you think the cost to chrome this one will cost as much as buying a new chromed one?

Well you can't buy a chrome good so the only way is to have it done . With that said I am not sure what Good case is made of and if it can be chromed .

I did look up the material in the manual. It is a an AL and Mg alloy called aulmag. And since it has that high of a level of MG, it cannot be plated. Plan B. Gonna paint it white. If the paint does not hold up well, ill get it powdercoated. Condidering it's age (1988) it is in remarkable good condition internally. Looks like new, bearings tight, and clean. We are in fresh water so I believe that helps a Ton. Ill post finished product pictures.

Here is the cleaned up unit. Used marine lithium grease for the bearings, and 140 awg gear oil for the reservoir. Re-sealed the cover and ready to paint.

I did consider it, however, the surface was just rough enough it would have taken plenty of elbow grease to polish it up well enough for that. Have it all painted up and will install tomorrow while giving my weekly visit to the boat. Turned out OK, but first choice was chrome. Sometimes we just cant have what we want.... Like endless summers in Michigan.

Ill post the finished product. Next project is the new larger swim platform.
