The Edmund Fitzgerald - 35 Years Later

This coming Wednesday, November 10th, is the 35th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald 17 miles off of Whitefish Point in 530 feet of water in Lake Superior.

The Detroit Free Press has uncovered a couple of dozen never-released photographs of the wreckage that were taken in 1994.

I am a student of the Fitzgerald tragedy and read everything I can find and thought some of you might enjoy it also.

Winds were reported as high as 52kts and pretty much sustained at 35- 40kts. Waves were anywhere from 15ft - 30ft.

Ten minutes before the last radio transmission from the Fitz, The Arthur Andersen which trailed the Fitz by 10 miles was "... struck by two huge waves that put green water on the pilot house, 35 feet above the water line. The waves hit with enough force to push the the starboard lifeboat down on its saddles, damaging the bottom." That is a quote from the log I am speaking of that I will send.

I'm like you and read everything i can get my hands on about the ED FITZ. could you send me a copy of the transcripts? chauzersportfishing@charter.net
i worked on the hull that was said to be the twin to the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Edward ryerson. it sat in sturgeon bay from 1987 until ,06 when the company who owned the boat put it back in service. so we (bay shipbuilding) did allot of work so it would pass an inspection. docking plugs, railings, repairing bulkheads, a cracked keel-son, leaking water-tights etc. it didn't have a self unloader and was therefore considered inefficient so it was docked.
