1987 Trojan 10.8 Meter Fuel Gauge Sender Issue

I had my mechanic diagnose my non-working fuel gauge. The verdict; the fuel sender in the tank is not working. No big deal, right? No. In the 10.8M the fuel tank is under the cockpit floor and to get to it, my mechanic says, the entire floor needs to be lifted (which is screwed down nice and tight around a bait tank, etc). Seems like a tremendous job. Alternative, he says, is to get a new "ultrasonic" type of sending unit that gets mounted on the side of the tank and is "easier" to install.

Questions for group, anybody ever remove cockpit floor to get at sender to fix in gas tank? Anybody install a new "ultrasonic" sender? If so, how was the install and does it work?

Thanks!

The only "ultrasonic" senders I know of and can find on a quick search go where the old senders go . I hope he is not talking about putting a hole on the side of the tank .

Do you have info on the units he was talking about ?

Maybe be there is something new I am not aware of . On my boat I replaced my senders with Wema senders could not be happier

My 10 meter has an access panel that screws out to get to the sender. I do not know if this was OEM or added. If you can determine where the sender is on the tank maybe you can cut a hole in the cockpit floor, replace the sender and install an access panel to fill the hole.

find a new mechanic who is capable of thought.

One of the first things I did when I bought my boat 14 years ago was to replace the fuel sending unit.

I simply located the unit on the top of the tank and cut a hole in the deck in order to install an access bung.

Let's see if I can locate a photo for you.

note that the end of the tape measure is against the aft side of the cockpit floor, on the interior.

also, the photo & measurements are for a 1983 10 meter EXPRESS

+1 on cutting an access hole.

keep in mind that the aft deck is BALSA CORED.

Care must be used to PROPERLY SEAL the new hole when installing the new bung/inspection plate.

Also, I learned that a WEMA style sending unit is a far better choice than the technology used by the factory.
