This subject came up a while back on a f32 . My answer was to use a fork lift . At the time I did not expect to post photos . Well a few weekends ago my port engine went boom . So I had a busy day yesterday . I hope to be up and running to day

Sorry to hear you are having to rebuild an engine right in the middle of the season.
Hope you have her back together soon.

While that maybe true , I had to drive 4+ hours one way to get this ( with a lot of $$$). You can bet I will keep a lot of spares off the old engine

Sorry about that .

I will set the record straight first this happen on Saturday the 28 of may on the Memorial day weekend . Finding the problem was easy once the smoke cleared . Then I had to go engine shopping ( lot of junk out out there ) look at new too .I found this low hour used one 4+ hours away . Made a offer based on photos and video pending hearing run and inspection . found the money . Pick up the engine and left it at a friends ,rented a car then drove to Ct for Wes's funeral . 1300 miles later engine made it home (last Wednesday ) . This weekend made the swap . Its up and running but gauges not working I need to swap senders . Took the boat back to my marina on 1 engine but used the new one for only docking . No sea trial until the gauges100% .
Feel better now ?

Geez man , sorry to see this......good to see that you can get all this rectified this quickly, out and in with the replacement.....good job.
Looking back, did you get any warning of the failure , noise or just bang??? must of been a fair mess in there....

Not much if any warning . loss of power then vibration . Though I got a crab pot in the wheel but the vibration was still the there out of gear . From the loss of power to knowing I was screwed 30 seconds at the most . Still not 100% sure of the cause . Maybe blew the tip off #5 injector or a sudden loss of coolant ( senders don't work with no coolant ) I found the back freeze plug out not sure if that's a cause or a result .
I will up date when I tear it down and figure it out , but that will have to wait a while .
And yes it was a big mess .

The CAUSE of the failure is the concern.
Generally speaking, these things happen for a reason.
Repeating this incident is what we need to avoid.
Surely it was not a preventative maintenance issue.
Did you install these engines new?
How many hours?
Any possibility of overpropping at any time?
My condolences on the passing of your Cummins.

A few theories on what happened . #5 injector may have blown the tip and hydrolocked #5 was my first theory . But I found the rear freeze plug blown out of block so a sudden over heat is possible . no coolant = no / inaccurate gague reading and no alarm . but the plug could have blown out as a result of the engine blowing . I will know more when I take it apart . But that's not high on the to do list . I do know it broke the rod on the wrist pin end so I am pretty sure some thing stop the movement of #5 piston .
Not over propped since I have owned it

"Not over propped since I have owned it"
was the refit done by you and were the Cummins new when installed, or take outs?
